Monomer-Addition Growth with a Slow Initiation Step: A Growth Model for Silica Particles from Alkoxides
نویسنده
چکیده
A simplified monomer-addition model with a first-order activation step is developed to describe the dynamics of growth of silica particles from alkoxides. In the fimit of slow hydrolysis, we obtain expressions for the evolution of the particle mass and particle polydispersity, as well as an expression for the particle size as a function of the hydrolysis rate constant, the polymerization rate constant, and the initial concentration of the orthosilicate. We find that the formation of the particles is adequately modeled by a reaction limited growth. © 1989 Academic Press, Inc.

What Factors Control the Structure of Silica Aerogels
By manipulating polymerization conditions in solution precursors, it is possible to control the structure of silica aerogels. Porosity varies from grain-like to polymer-like. When produced from alkoxides, pH is the dominant factor that determines structure. Under strongly basic conditions (pH > 12) compact colloidal particles are observed. In the range pH = 8-12, particles of varying surface ro...
متن کاملSynthesis of polystyrene-silica composite particles via one-step nanoparticle-stabilized emulsion polymerization.
Polystyrene-silica core-shell composite particles are prepared by one-step emulsion polymerization with a nonionic initiator VA-086, solely stabilized by silica nanoparticles. The silica nanoparticles are successfully incorporated as the shell, likely due to the fact that the nanoparticles are thermodynamically favorable to adsorb and remain at the liquid-liquid interfaces during the emulsion p...
متن کاملSculpting Silica Colloids by Etching Particles with Nonuniform Compositions
We present the synthesis of new shapes of colloidal silica particles by manipulating their chemical composition and subsequent etching. Segments of silica rods, prepared by the ammonia catalyzed hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) from polyvinylpyrrolidone loaded water droplets, were grown under different conditions. Upon decreasing temperature, delaying ethanol additi...
متن کاملGrowth of monodisperse mesoscopic metal-oxide colloids under constant monomer supply.
In closed systems, control over the size of monodisperse metal-oxide colloids is generally limited to submicrometric dimensions. To overcome this difficulty, we explore the formation and growth of silica particles under constant monomer supply. The monomer source is externally driven by the progressive addition into the system of one of the precursors. Monodisperse spherical particles are produ...
متن کاملGradual Growth of Gold Nanoseeds on Silica for Silica@Gold Core-Shell Nanoparticles and Investigation of Optical Properties
Metal nanoshells consists of a dielectric core surrounded by a thin noble metal shell, possess unique optical properties that render nanoshells attractive for use in different technologies. This paper reports a facile method for growth of small gold nanoparticles on the functionalized surface of larger silica nanoparticles. Mono-dispersed silica particles and gold nanoparticles were prepared by...
